When his entire community was poisoned by intruders, one tribesman escaped by tunnelling deep into the Amazon. He has since passed away. The Man of the Hole, as he was known, lived alone on Tanaru native grounds in Brazil's Rondonia state's Amazon rainforest.
The hermit was known as Funai by local activists for his unusual hunting methods and his constant avoidance of interaction with strangers. Funai initially observed the Man of the Hole in 1996, and he later observed him setting traps for his prey in large holes he dug into the first floor, according to the Mirror UK.
The final tribal member consistently refused to communicate with him directly or to send him food packages. The rest of his tribe is said to have perished in the 1980s as a result of land grabs and cattle ranchers.
On August 23, his body was discovered in a hammock inside a cabin.
