Bahrain yesterday welcomed the U S -bro - kered maritime demarcation deal signed by Israel and Lebanon as ‘historic’.
The deal, Bahrain said, constitutes a positive opportunity to benefit from offshore energy exploration.
Bahrain said the move confirms the importance of dialogue and common understanding in settling disputes and promoting security, stability and peace.
There, however, was no joint signing ceremony: Lebanese President Michel Aoun signed a letter approving the deal at his palace in Baabda in the presence of the US official who mediated the accord, Amos Hochstein.
Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid signed separately in Jerusalem. Following this, the leader of Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, announced the end of his armed group’s mobilization. Nasrallah said in a televised speech that the signing of the deal is a “very big victory for Lebanon.”
