As rescue operations continued at the mosque in Pakistan's Peshawar, where an explosion killed at least 90 people and injured 200 others during the afternoon prayers on Monday, rescue officials on Tuesday recovered the severed head of the suspected suicide bomber who they believe blew himself up inside the mosque.
Nearly 400 worshippers, including personnel of the police, army and bomb disposal squad, were offering prayers inside the mosque in the highly-fortified Police Lines area in Pakistan's restive northwestern city Peshawar around 1:40 pm on Monday when the suicide bomber, who was sitting in the front row, blew himself up.
The impact of the blast was such that it caused the roof to collapse, trapping scores of worshippers in the rubble. Rescuers struggled to cut through the collapsed rooftop to make their way down and tend to victims caught in the wreckage.
The attacker appeared to have passed through several barricades manned by security forces to get into the "Red Zone" compound that houses police and counter-terrorism offices.
