Demand for prawns rises ahead of ban

The markets in Bahrain witnessed a huge demand for prawns on Friday as a four-month-long ban on the catch and sale of prawns will come into effect on March 15.

Normally the small size prawns would cost 2 BD and large size up to BD 4. But now, the price range is between BD 3 to BD 5.

“The ban is an annual affair. It’s due to the breeding season. Everybody likes prawns and so there is huge demand for it. The cost varies as per the size of the prawn,” said Mohammed Elias, a shopkeeper. “This fish has very less waste. It doesn’t have thorns too. You only have to worry if you are allergic to this fish.”

Commenting on the ban, Haneef Kunhippally, a customer, said, “I come here every week. At least one kilo prawns is must in our house. I cannot wait for these four months to finish.”

Meanwhile, hotel owners are also not happy with the annual ban. “I do understand that it’s an ecological necessity. But, fish is a fast moving product. The prawn dishes are the most sought-after items in the menu. But, we have to forgo those dishes for some time,” said a hotel owner.
