Magnus Carlsen won the FIDE World Cup for the first time on Thursday after three days and four games of very tense chess across two formats.
In the final, he overcame India's Praggnanandhaa, but not until the 18-year-old young prodigy pulled him through the tie-breaker.
Carlsen was declared the winner after the second game of the tiebreaker. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the two players had one draw apiece.
Regardless of the ultimate result, the FIDE World Cup was a memorable event for the youngster from Chennai since he also qualified for the renowned Candidates Tournament, which is staged to choose a challenger for world champion Ding Liren in the next global chess championship battle.
Pragg, who turned 18 during the World Cup, was the youngest World Cup finalist and champion in history.
Pragg, who is seeded 31, is also the lowest seed to reach the World Cup final.
Praggnanandhaa became the third youngest player to qualify for the Candidates event, behind the famous Bobby Fischer and Carlsen.
