Tokyo residents looking for love and wedded bliss may soon have a new option on their phones. The Japanese capital announced plans to launch its very own dating app this summer, aiming to combat the nation's declining birth rate.
This unique government initiative will require users to submit proof of their single status and a declaration of their desire to marry. Unlike other dating apps where income is often displayed, Tokyo's app will take it a step further, demanding tax documents to verify annual salary.
"We discovered that a significant portion, 70% of residents who want to get married, aren't actively seeking partners through events or apps," explained a Tokyo government official overseeing the project. "Our goal is to gently nudge them in the right direction."
